Recent Additions to My Kindle That Prove I Have No Shelf Control

Another day, another opportunity to willingly be bespelled by books.

One recent addition was from my wish list (always a plus) at the tantalizing price of 99 cents and the rest were free kindle titles that piqued my interest as well. My latest additions are:

  • The Bachelor Bargain by Maddison Michaels (historical romance)
  • Manners and Monsters by Tilly Wallace (historical paranormal romance/mystery)
  • Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Kait Nolan (adult contemporary holiday romance)
  • The Vampire Heir by Juliana Haygert (paranormal romance)
  • A Vampire Bewitched by L.E. Wilson (paranormal romance)

What I like most about these books is how different they are and that their genres are ones I want to read more often (historical fiction and vampires). If I remember correctly, The Bachelor Bargain I discovered via another book blogger (one of the best kinds of ways to discover new books) and the others were casual browsing finds through recommended/read-alike lists.

Anyway, thank goodness it’s Friday plus a three-day weekend from work. I’m hoping to catch up on a lot of reading and get a jump-start on next week’s work. This weekend I’d also like to try baking a funfetti cake for the first time, so that’ll be…interesting.

Enjoy your weekend!

AS ALWAYS, HAPPY READING!!!

October Book Haul!

Different colored, illustrated pumpkins outline the image that says October Book Haul.

October Book Haul!

Happy Sunday!

Have you bought or received any new books recently?

October was a good bookish month for me. I found several free kindle ebooks on Amazon, I was pleasantly surprised to have won two giveaways, and I attended a book fair. What’s also exciting about this haul is that all of the books are by new-to-me authors.

The books I’m most looking forward to reading are Class Act, Turning, and Wildfire Griffin. Probably not this year but hopefully next year I can set aside a month to binge read some of the unread books on my Kindle because I have WAY too many and it’s easy for me to forget them. That’s the bookish life!

Here are the new additions to my bookshelves:

Scholastic Book Fair

Class Act by Jerry Craft

Love Like Sky by Leslie C. Youngblood

Sunny Makes A Splash by Jennifer L. Holm

Goodreads Giveaway Wins

The Girl of Magic and Dreams by Charity Tober

Turning by Joy L. Smith

Ebook Haul!!!

Red plaid banner that says "Ebook Haul!!!".

Happy Friday!

How I feel about having gotten more books so soon: 😑

But also: 😆💕😆

Another book haul? Yes, indeed! In my humble bookish opinion, this ebook haul is overflowing with epic and awesome. I am ecstatic that I now own a copy of these stories. Did I go overboard? *pretends not to notice the many many many unread books* Nah! Especially since I saved a lot getting them as ebooks.

Here are the next books I’ve added to my e-bookshelf:

At Summer’s End by Courtney Ellis

I know the author and I wanted to support her debut novel. Such a lovely cover too!

*      *     *

When an ambitious female artist accepts an unexpected commission at a powerful earl’s country estate in 1920s England, she finds his war-torn family crumbling under the weight of long-kept secrets. From debut author Courtney Ellis comes a captivating novel about finding the courage to heal after the ravages of war.

Alberta Preston accepts the commission of a lifetime when she receives an invitation from the Earl of Wakeford to spend a summer painting at His Lordship’s country home, Castle Braemore. Bertie imagines her residence at the prodigious estate will finally enable her to embark on a professional career and prove her worth as an artist, regardless of her gender.

Upon her arrival, however, Bertie finds the opulent Braemore and its inhabitants diminished by the Great War. The earl has been living in isolation since returning from the trenches, locked away in his rooms and hiding battle scars behind a prosthetic mask. While his younger siblings eagerly welcome Bertie into their world, she soon sees chips in that world’s gilded facade. As she and the earl develop an unexpected bond, Bertie becomes deeply entangled in the pain and secrets she discovers hidden within Castle Braemore and the hearts of its residents.

Threaded with hope, love, and loss, At Summer’s End delivers a portrait of a noble family–and a world–changed forever by the war to end all wars.

Awakened by Moni Boyce

It’s been a long while since I’ve read books featuring vampires and witches. It’s a short read and was a free kindle book.

*      *     *

Secret lineage, a ruthless vampire, and forbidden love.

Willow Stevens dreams of stardom are eclipsed by the real nightmares of a sinister man haunting her dreams. Unbeknownst to her, Eli Walker, her hot but snobbish co-worker, may know the reason nightmares plague her, but their history shows he is more prone to reject her, than help her.

Then Willow passes out at work only to wake in Eli’s apartment. There she has her chance to learn more about her heritage. But, knowing why the vampire king stalks her doesn’t make the nightmares disappear. If anything, they become more real as she now faces off against a slew of creatures she’d always believed were myth.

That Eli is one of those creatures is just her luck. Secret witch guild or not, his natural ways are casting spells her heart can’t escape. As a Protector his only focus should be her safety. Anything else is forbidden. He plans to stay in task, but some women break a man, or tempt him to break the rules.

Can Eli keep Willow alive and safe from the vampires long enough for her to grow her own powers or will both cast aside rules for a reckless passion that will only lead to danger?

Damaged Goods by Talia Hibbert

A free kindle read by an author I want to read more from.

With his kind eyes and dirty smile, Samir’s still hot as hell—and he still treats Laura like a goddess, baby bump and all. The wild boy she spent one magical summer with is every inch a man, and he’s more than ready to care for her tiny family.

But Laura’s been keeping a secret Samir might never forgive. When she finally confesses, will he remain by her side? Or is this fairytale ending too good to be true?

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

I need more of the wonderful Brown sisters in my life. Plus this was an irresistible $1 that I saw by chance 😂

*      *     *

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion. The next items?

• Enjoy a drunken night out.
• Ride a motorcycle.
• Go camping.
• Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
• Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
• And… do something bad.

But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.

Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior…

The Highlander’s Pirate Lass by Heather McCollum

This was a review buy after reading Julie @ One Book More’s review and Ashley @ Red-Haired Ash Reads’s review – thank you, thank you! 💙 – but also I’ve been wanting to read Heather McCollum’s books for a while.

*      *     *

Eliza Wentworth is no lady. After the notorious pirate Jandeau murdered her family, she vowed to spend the rest of her life at sea, saving others. She’d rather be firing cannons than embroidering pillows—or worse, bowing to the demands of a husband. But when she’s stranded on an island off the coast of Scotland, now she is the one in need of help. And, annoyingly, that help comes not only from a man, but a man she struggles to resist.

Highlander Beck Macquarie has never met a woman like Eliza. He hasn’t met many women, period, thanks to the blasted curse set upon Wolf Isle decades ago. To save the clan, he needs a wife and bairns, and rough-around-the edges Eliza is anything but wife material. She has no intention of staying once she’s able to set sail again. He should let her go. But the desire between them is impossible to ignore.

When she asks Beck to teach her the ways of the bedroom while she bides her time on his island, he can’t say no. As they learn more about each other, though, past trauma and secrets resurface. Now, Eliza must choose between the freedom and comfort of the only life she’s ever known and sacrificing it all to save the people she loves…including Beck.

[#PubDayTuesday] Book Review: Open Your Heart by Cheris Hodges

*advanced kindle copy won in a Goodreads Giveaway*

Image via Goodreads

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Series: Richardson Sisters #3
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Recommend to Others?: Yes

ABOUT: Their family’s historic bed-and-breakfast in Charleston, South Carolina, is a legacy the four very different Richardson sisters are determined to protect at all costs. But sudden passion is a seductive–and dangerous–complication…

For fashion boutique owner Yolanda Richardson, coming home is a matter of life and death. Witness to a brutal crime, her family’s quiet B&B is her only refuge until she can testify against the perpetrator. But her reserved hired bodyguard, Charles Montgomery, is anything but safe. His icy cool-under-fire–and hidden intensity–is too explosive for Yolanda to resist…

Love always equals loss–Charles knows that hard equation all too well. Controlling his emotions keeps his clients from harm–and his heart safe. Yolanda’s beauty and headstrong spirit have him wanting her in all kinds of ways. But for her own protection, he has to do his best to keep her at arm’s length. Until unexpected danger and lethal misunderstandings put their survival–and any chance at a future together–on the knife-edge…

My Review: This is the first story I read by Cheris Hodges and I really liked it! Open Your Heart was a charming love story.

I admire Yolanda’s independence to strike out on her own and open up her own fashion boutique. She’s got a good head on her shoulders but can be incredibly stubborn when she wants to. There were small moments when she was a tad whiny and her behavior towards Charles unfounded. But I liked her character all the same and how far she’s willing to go to protect her family from danger.

Charles is a swoon-worthy love interest who takes his job very seriously. Though very good at what he does, he has his work cut out for him trying to keep Yolanda safe. I like that he’s not afraid to be real with her about how dire the situation is, though that hot and cold does cause some friction between them. It’s also a struggle at times to maintain his logic and reason around Yolanda when he’s so drawn to her. To both their frustrations Charles holds himself back but for truly tragic reasons. His path towards healing and a second chance at love was so sweet.

I love the relationship between Yolanda and her three other sisters. They argue and sometimes get on each other’s nerves. But it’s clear how much they love and are super protective of one another. The family’s close relationship is unshakable, which was nice to see within the story.

Overall, Open Your Heart was an entertaining romantic suspense. The characters were well written and interesting. The story kept my attention the entire time. And the romance between Yolanda and Charles was tantalizingly slow, sweet as can be, and steamy!

Open Your Heart is book 3 of 4 of the Richardson Sisters series. I’m looking forward to reading the other books featuring Yolanda’s sisters as I got to know them really well in this one.

Free Kindle Mini Book Haul

Happy Wednesday, Bookworms!

What was the last book(s) you bought?

I’m still on a book buying ban, which has been excruciating. BUT I figured it’d be okay (though it’s hard-core cheatsiedoodling) if I bought books that didn’t cost any money. Last month I browsed through Kindle books for who knows how long and found a few that sounded appealing.

Here’s my belated April mini haul:

#TheRealCinderella by Yesenia Vargas

A modern-day teenage Cinderella. An all-star varsity basketball player. Will the chemistry disappear when they go from anonymous to face-to-face?

Geeky Ella Reyes is at the bottom of the totem pole at Westwood High. Her ultra-popular stepsisters refuse to be seen with her at school, and every day she comes home to a mountain of chores.

Ella’s only friend (and maybe crush) lives on the other side of her phone’s screen. She and Baller929 know everything about each other, except their real names.

When they have a chance to meet at her school’s Halloween ball, Ella must figure out a way to get there without her stepmom or stepsisters finding out.

Is revealing her identity to Baller929 worth risking the one good thing left in her life? Or is he too good to be true?

Believe In Me by Amy Sparling (Jett #1)

Growing up as the kid prodigy of famous racer Jace Adams, Jett has lived in a world of dirt bikes, money, and everything he could ever want. The Parks own a dirt bike track with the Adams and while Keanna is waiting on her mom to return, she spends a lot of time hanging out alone. Jett is under strict orders to make her feel welcome, but they’re from two different worlds and everything he does seems to get under her skin. Keanna has known guys like Jett before and she’s smart enough to stay away from someone whose looks can get him anything he wants. After just a few days, Jett can’t stop thinking about her. But if he wants her to see him as anything other than some cocky rich guy, he’ll have to show her his true feelings and make her believe in him.

Alpha by Regan Ure (Forever #1)

Seventeen-year-old Scarlett Hayes is living her life by her own rules. Losing her parents at a young age has made her strong and fiercely independent. She knows exactly who she is and nothing is going to change that. Everything starts to change for her when she moves to a new town. She meets Cade Presley.
